The Car Computer Project:
Installing a Windows XP PC in a factory car radio

What- This project began as a convenient way to play my 10GB+ MP3 collection (and maybe DVDs) in my car. I could have purchased an off the shelf system such as the Kenwood Music Keg, but the Keg and a compatible DVD deck/screen/cd player were out of my price range. A Windows based PC is less expensive, has more storage, more upgrade options, and makes for one very cool project that fuses my long standing love of car audio, and my skills as a computer technician!

Windows V. Linux- I settled on Windows XP because my Linux ability is pretty limited, especially when it comes to media. I'm already rolling my own PC and audio system, I'll save a custom OS/interface for later. Windows also allows use of the ATI Remote Wonder as an excellent, safe, flexible controller while on the road.

Inspiration- Having followed the case mod community for some time, I had been interested in my own unique project, but hadn't yet decided what to do. While browsing Mini-ITX.com one night I noticed that the VIA Mini-ITX mobos were only 170mm square. Hmmmm.... That's about the size of a DIN car radio... Tape measure... yes! the radio is wide enough inside (barely)! What else is needed? Notebook hdd.. no problem, size wise. Notebook CD/DVD drive? Yup, it'll all fit! I was on my way. Note that my factory radio is 1.5 DIN high (regular aftermarket CD Players are 1 DIN).  You will need the extra height of a 1.5 or 2 DIN radio, many GM and Asian cars have them. Mine is approx 65mm high.
